Grasping God’s Love in Ephesians 3

And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.
Ephesians 3: 17b-19

 Do you want to be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God?

We could spend days meditating and studying about the “fullness of God” without finishing our understanding of this. But it is enough to simply know that we want this. The psalms are full of prayers and praises that sing of God’s power, strength, compassion, permanence, and awesomeness. And here, Paul tells us that we can be filled with “all the fullness” of this awesome and holy God!

The key is love

Paul says that the more we grasp the love of Jesus, the more we will be filled with the fullness of god. It’s not just any “love” that we should be seeking – it’s not feelings, romance, or being who we want to be – it’s Jesus’ love. His love is wider, longer, higher, and deeper than we know. We need his own power to understand the depths of his love. We need to be rooted and established in it.

We see God’s love in the death of Jesus, a sacrifice made for people who were sinners and rejecting him. We see God’s love in the resurrection of Jesus, bringing us into his presence for all of eternity. Paul knows that the more we understand and rest in this love, the more we will be filled with God’s presence and find peace, healing, and purpose in life.

Seek His love in community

Did you note that Paul is specifically praying that the Ephesians will seek and know this love “together with all the Lord’s holy people”? We are not meant to be alone and live our lives in isolation. On the contrary, Jesus died for all people, loves all people, and we are best able to experience his love when we are experiencing it in a community of people who love him. Great experiences – from a good movie to a good meal to a good Savior – are best when you’re able to share them with other people. Share Jesus with others. Encourage others to better grasp the truth of his love. Celebrate his power and goodness in your family, community, and amongst our churches. Let us be filled together with all the fullness of God.
