A prayer to celebrate mothers today

Parents have a sacred duty from God to raise their children in the fear of the Lord.  Mothers are a huge part of this.  Mothers comfort, care, encourage, soothe, and equip their children.  We may say old clichés like “I brought you into this world, and I can take you out of it!” but the reality, God has brought your children in this world, and He has given each child to a specific mother as a good gift, a gift heavy with responsibility.

“Now fear the Lord and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your ancestors worshiped beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:14-15

Serving the Lord in fear and with all faithfulness is hard work.  Mothers play a huge role in helping their children do this well – helping them to identify idols and throw them away, helping them to evaluate decisions and make commitments wisely.

Will you pray with us for mothers today?

Holy Father, we are thankful for how you provide for us.  You cherish families, inviting us into your family through the sacrifice of your Son.  We pray together today for our mothers.  Lord, may those who have children in their home lead their children in serving and worshipping you.  Give patience, kindness, joy, and great wisdom.  Lord, may those who wish for children lay their hands open before you today, praying and waiting, praying and grieving, serving and worshipping you today.  And Lord, we know that every mother-child relationship is different.  Many are a great source of joy and encouragement, but others are a source of pain, grief, or hurt.  Have mercy on those who are struggling today, Father.  Pour out your grace.  Give us the words to encourage and thank our mothers today.  May we walk together in faithful service for you.
